MARY GARBER - PIONEER FEMALE SPORTSWRITER - MY TRIBUTE
The above picture is my father, Clarence "Big House" Gaines and Mary Garber. I'm betting that it's a picture of them after she received an honorary degree from a local University in Winston-Salem, NC, most likely, Winston-Salem State University. When Mary died in 2008, I was in the midst of coaching my daughter's GU14 soccer team. I wanted every girl on that team to know about Mary. I shared the following missive with them and their parents. It's my tribute to Mary. She was a great friend to my family. This world lost a great human being on Sunday, September 21, 2008. I doubt that any of you know anything about the life of Mary Garber, but you should. Mary is known in the sports world as one of the "first full-time female sportswriter at a daily newspaper in the USA." She wrote for my hometown newspapers, the Winston-Salem Journal and the Twin City Sentinel from 1946 - 2002, and was a very good friend of my father and our family. Mary was the ...
